INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTION

The environment at Wise Owl Tutoring is comfortable and relaxed, geared toward a positive learning experience. As the student gains a better understanding of the material, his confidence increases, leading to better grades, which then leads to more smiles. In other words, we work for smiles.

We have no preplanned method or approach, but treat each student according to his/her unique needs, background, and effective learning methods. Each student is assigned to the tutor we believe will be the most effective, and stays with that tutor. The tutor gets to know the student's abilities and the style of teaching that works best.

No diagnostic testing is performed, partly because we don't want to subject the student to even more stress, and also because we can assess the student's abilities easily by working informally. We do not require a commitment for a total number of hours or a minimum number of hours per week--no contract of any kind.  Most students do well with one hour of instruction per week. If more time is needed, we leave it to the student and parents to request it.

We strive to provide a positive environment in which even the shyest student is comfortable asking questions. In turn, we take every opportunity to praise the student, and are gentle in making corrections.

Our tutoring stresses an understanding of fundamental concepts. We believe that a solid foundation leads to improvement both now and in the future.

We welcome students currently enrolled in school, or preparing for a class.  We also welcome home-schooled students.

We do not travel to the student's home. We believe we are more effective in our office, where we have useful resources and a setting conducive to learning.

Normally, students are given a recurring day and time, say Tuesday at 5:00 pm. Unless we are notified otherwise, we are prepared for the student each week at that time.   (If we are not given 24 hours notice of a cancellation, we charge for a missed session.)  If a student cannot make a regularly scheduled session, we do our best to find an alternate time.  The time your student doesn't use can often be used by another student if we know in advance.

Our students are not limited to those currently enrolled in a traditional school, but also include students taking online classes, those home-schooled, or those preparing for a class.

For students (or families) who schedule four or more hours per week on a regular basis, we discount the rate to $30 per hour.
